International Hospitals

Chiang Mai has two major international hospitals that meet the expectations of expats and Thai residents requiring English-language care and modern diagnostic equipment.

Chiang Mai Ram Hospital

Located on Suthep Road near the Chiang Mai Zoo, Chiang Mai Ram is the city's oldest international hospital and a consistent choice for expats. The facility has English-speaking medical staff throughout the hierarchy, modern diagnostic imaging, emergency services, and a broad range of specialists. A general consultation runs 500 to 1,200 THB depending on the speciality and doctor. Blood tests start at 200 to 400 THB. CT scans cost 3,000 to 5,000 THB.

Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai

Located on Bumrung Buri Road, Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai is the larger of the two and operates as a satellite of the Bangkok Hospital group based in the capital. It has a broader range of specialists, a larger emergency department, and a more modern physical plant. Consultation fees are similar to Chiang Mai Ram, typically 700 to 1,200 THB with specialists charging at the higher end. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai is often the choice for serious or complex conditions.

Choosing between them

Both hospitals deliver reliable care. Chiang Mai Ram is centrally located and slightly more accessible for routine consultations. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai is often preferred for serious diagnoses, surgery, or complex specialists. Many long-stay residents use Chiang Mai Ram for routine care and switch to Bangkok Hospital for major procedures.

Doctor Consultations and Diagnosis

Private clinics and hospital outpatient departments are the standard path for doctor visits in Chiang Mai. A typical consultation includes basic examination and prescription of oral medication. Blood tests are available on the same day or the next day with results usually ready within 24 hours.

Cost for a general consultation: 500 to 1,200 THB. Specialist consultations (cardiology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, etc.) run 700 to 1,500 THB. Most doctors in the major hospitals speak functional English; in smaller clinics, English capability varies and a translator may be useful.

Bring your passport to all visits. Hospitals require identification and may ask for insurance details. If you have no insurance, you can pay out of pocket and the bill will be delivered at the end of the visit or the next day.

Dental Care

Dental work in Chiang Mai is significantly cheaper than equivalent care in Western countries and the quality is high. Multiple international-standard dental clinics operate in Nimman, the Old City, and other central areas.

Standard costs: routine cleaning and checkup, 500 to 800 THB; simple filling, 800 to 1,500 THB; crown, 6,000 to 10,000 THB; root canal treatment, 4,000 to 7,000 THB; scaling and polishing, 600 to 1,000 THB. Teeth whitening runs 2,000 to 4,000 THB. Implants are available but cost 15,000 to 25,000 THB per tooth.

Several dental chains have English-speaking receptionists and dentists as standard. They maintain regular appointment systems and typically accept card payment or can invoice for larger procedures.

Pharmacy System

Pharmacies in Chiang Mai are well-stocked with common medications and carry many drugs available in Western countries without requiring a prescription. Antibiotics, antihistamines, pain relievers, and remedies for traveller's stomach are broadly available and cheap by international standards.

A course of antibiotics costs 150 to 500 THB depending on the drug and strength. Paracetamol or ibuprofen cost 20 to 40 THB per packet. Antihistamines cost 30 to 100 THB. Most pharmacists speak functional English, particularly in the Old City and Nimman areas. For any prescription from a doctor, bring the paper receipt and the pharmacist will fill it.

Most large shopping malls and central areas have multiple pharmacies. Boots operates branches in Chiang Mai and carries a familiar range of over-the-counter products.

Medical Insurance

Healthcare insurance is not mandatory for living in Chiang Mai but is strongly recommended for anyone planning a stay longer than a few months. Insurance protects against unexpected major costs, covers specialist consultations, and is required as a condition of certain visa categories.

See our comprehensive guide to healthcare insurance in Chiang Mai for detailed information on coverage levels, visa requirements, premiums by age, and how to choose a plan.

Visa-Specific Insurance Requirements

Two long-stay visa categories require proof of health insurance:

O-A Retirement Visa

Applicants aged 50 and older must provide evidence of health insurance with minimum coverage of 40,000 THB outpatient and 400,000 THB inpatient. This is a mandatory condition of approval. Any insurance policy issued by a reputable provider meeting these minimums is acceptable. Budget plans commonly meet these requirements.

O-X Long-Term Resident Visa

The O-X visa for highly-skilled individuals and retirees also requires health insurance with the same minimum coverage as the O-A. The requirement must be met before the visa is approved.

For other visa types (DTV, tourist visa, visa-exempt entry, ED visa, etc.), insurance is optional from a regulatory perspective but remains practically important. Unexpected medical bills from a serious illness or accident can exceed your budget by a large margin.

Insurance recommendation: For independent insurance broking and advice tailored to your visa category and age, consult Tawm Rosendal on Facebook. Tawm is an AIA broker with expertise in health insurance for Chiang Mai residents and can compare plans across multiple insurers to find the right match for your needs and budget.

Medical Emergencies

Call 1669 for the Chiang Mai ambulance emergency line. Both major hospitals have emergency departments open 24 hours. Chiang Mai Ram is closer to the Old City; Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai is larger with more specialists on-site at night. In a genuine emergency, call 1669 and the dispatcher will direct you to the nearest appropriate facility.

If you are conscious and able to choose, going to your preferred hospital directly is faster than waiting for an ambulance. Grab is fast and cost-effective for non-critical conditions.

Wellness Infrastructure

Beyond formal healthcare, Chiang Mai has extensive wellness options including yoga studios, Thai massage, gym facilities, and meditation programs.

Yoga classes run 200 to 400 THB per class in independent studios or 2,000 to 4,000 THB per month for unlimited membership. Traditional Thai massage at reputable independent shops costs 250 to 350 THB per hour. Multiple gyms offer monthly memberships from 1,500 to 3,000 THB depending on facilities. Meditation courses and retreats are available at temples and dedicated centres, many at low cost or donation-based.
